GMOs have had a tremendous impact on our food supply. Because of GM technology, we have been able to feed the world's growing population and develop sustainable farming practices that are better for the planet. Moreover, the science confirming the safety of GMOs continues to pile up. So what do you do if you're an anti-GMO activist looking to scare the public about GM technology? Attack scientists, of course!
For the last several years, anti-GMO non-profits and their corporate donors have carried out carefully-orchestrated, well-funded campaigns to mislead the public about the safety of GMOs and harass the scientists who develop them.
Who are the groups behind these campaigns, and why are they such fierce critics of GM technology?
My guest today may be able to explain what's going on. Dr. Kevin Folta is the chairman of the Horticultural Sciences Department at the University of Florida, Gainesville. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Folta researches the functional genomics of small fruit crops, and he also hosts the talking biotech podcast, which is now up to 81 episodes.
